Understanding the New ADA Medical Equipment Standards
In July 2024, the U.S. Access Board published new technical standards for medical diagnostic equipment (MDE) – including scales, exam chairs, and imaging devices – to ensure all patients can safely and independently access care.
Effective October 8, 2024: All diagnostic equipment acquired by state and local government entities must be accessible.
Enforcement Begins: August 9, 2026.
Requirement: Facilities must have at least 10% of their diagnostic medical equipment ADA-compliant.
Purpose: Guarantee safe, equitable access to diagnostic care for individuals with disabilities.
